Meanwhile, Nikki comes up with a fund-raising idea. Harry is furious when Simon and Tally arrive for work having obviously spent the night together, and Keith's jealousy is out of control. Keith's plan to get Claire alone almost leads to a fatal accident, and Nikki considers her future with Jim after shocking revelations about his past emerge.

Comfort is disgusted when female members of staff strike raunchy poses for a charity calendar, and Tally works out that Harry has been self-prescribing. While rushing to work, Harry accidentally knocks down a cyclist who's left seriously injured and the tragic incident forces him to confront his escalating problems. Harry's attempt to kiss Lara at the calendar launch backfires, Comfort is led astray by a friend out for a good time, and Roxy confesses to being a surrogate mother.

Charlie is placed in an awkward position after discovering ex-wife Baz has remarried and her father has lung cancer, while tension builds between Fin and Comfort. A birthday meal for Jim turns into a surprise engagement party for Nikki, a man's admitted after a suffocation attempt, and Lara tells Harry they're just friends. Charlie struggles to stay strong when Louis is diagnosed with a rare fever, and Luke persuades Bex to get checked after she arrives late, looking pale and haggard.

Jim whisks Nikki away for a cosy weekend at his remote country house, Bex drowns her sorrows in wine and cigarettes, and Charlie's son finally responds to treatment. Charlie spends Christmas in Lapland at the invitation of Baz's dying father, but any hopes of festive fun are soon dashed when Dan crashes a skidoo. Luke feels responsible for a man's death at an Army barracks, while the love triangle between Baz, Dan and Charlie reaches a dramatic climax. Charlie blames Dan as Baz loses her fight for life, Jim immerses himself in work after the wedding fiasco, and Harry takes his anger out on Lara.

Tensions run high at Baz's funeral as Charlie and Dan struggle to put their feud to one side. Lara challenges Harry, and Jim receives unwelcome news. Harry puts Simon and Lara at risk during an underground bonding exercise, while Charlie hands Dan a court order to stop him taking Louis out of the country. Lara dives underwater to save Simon, Fin sends Comfort home drunk and Jim struggles to keep order when the hospital is besieged by patients.

Lara is appalled by Harry's decision to replace Simon temporarily, Fin is thwarted in his bid to patch things up with Comfort, and Nikki discovers she is pregnant. Abs tries to get through to an increasingly unstable foster child who has harmed herself with a broken bottle, and Lara shares a kiss with Simon on his return to work.

The attraction between Simon and Lara proves too strong to resist, Roxy tries to stop Nikki going ahead with the termination and Comfort misses her counselling session. Jim tracks Nikki down to the abortion clinic, where he begs her not to go through with the termination, and Lara turns up for work in one of Simon's shirts.

Comfort is forced to confront her demons when she and Fin are called out to an incident at a boatyard, while Tally's plan to meet up with Simon backfires. Roxy goes into premature labour, causing Nikki to put her grievances aside to help deliver the baby in the back of her car. Roxy gives her baby away, but the new parents are far from happy with the bundle of joy.

Comfort prepares for her last day, and Tally manipulates her father. Lara confronts Tally, and an addict holds Luke at gunpoint, demanding he hand over the key to the drugs box, but a struggle ensues and one of them is shot. Tally hits rock bottom after Harry suspends her and Simon tells her she was his biggest mistake, while Roxy faces heartbreak when the surrogate parents want the baby. Harry is forced to close the department to the public after a prison riot leaves several inmates injured, and the stress of the situation causes him to lash out at Lara.

Abs is attacked by a man who blames him for the death of his child, while Harry realises he has been neglecting Tally and suggests they take a holiday together. Unable to get through a hard day at work, Simon compensates by taking amphetamines, while Charlie and Jim clash over the latter's plans for the hospital. Jim's departmental changes enrage Charlie, and when a patient dies in reception, it only adds fuel to the fire and the staff threaten industrial action.

Harry's return to work prompts Charlie to draft his resignation letter, Fin and Comfort enjoy a romantic picnic, while Nikki and Lara are taken hostage. Harry fights to save Nikki's life, while Lara manages to escape with the help of one of the robbers and Josh begs Charlie to change his mind about resigning. Nikki's slow recovery from the fall is set back by devastating news, Luke reluctantly attends the inquest, and Kate insists Greg's death was his fault.

There's an unexpected development in store for Fin before he even reaches the altar, while Nikki and Simon face decisions that will change their lives for ever.

New paramedic Nina makes a bad impression, Josh's date with Caroline turns out to be an unmitigated disaster, and Lara is forced to take desperate measures. Nina annoys the rest of her team by playing the heroine. Simon is summoned to see Harry, Caroline pulls away from Josh, and Bex is on cloud nine.
